USA - Many believe that the mass media just tell whole-cloth, outright lies all the time, but that’s not usually how it works. What they do is selectively omit inconvenient facts, disproportionately amplify convenient facts, and uncritically report on dubious government assertions. Basically they only tell the truth when it’s convenient for them, and when it’s inconvenient they are silent. Only telling the truth when it’s convenient for you is effectively the same as lying all the time, only you can get away with it a lot easier.

VATICAN - Pope Francis received Jesuit Father James Martin in a 30-minute private audience Monday, which the Jesuits are calling “a highly significant public statement of support and encouragement.” “Father Martin is well known as a public speaker, author and for his pastoral ministry to LGBT people,” Gerard O’Connell reported Monday in the Jesuit magazine America.

SWEDEN - The Church of Sweden has demanded that the government adopt a more strenuous climate policy. At the same time, Archbishop Antje Jackelén compared her compatriot and teenage activist Greta Thunberg, the figurehead of the international climate strike movement, to Old Testament prophets. In its revised Episcopal Letter for the Climate, the Church of Sweden has demanded a tougher climate policy from Sweden's politicians and authorities. Earlier, the Church of Sweden had stepped into controversy by hailing Greta Thunberg as “Jesus's Sucessor”. Previously, even Uniting Church in Sweden deacon Anna Ardin likened the 16-year-old climate alarmist to biblical prophets, among other things, including “daring to talk about harsh reality” and “preaching repentance”. Greta Thunberg recently had her arguably biggest moment of fame when she addressed the UN General Assembly with a passionate speech.

CANADA - Scientists have found there is little evidence that eating red meat causes health problems. The research, led by Dalhousie University and McMaster University in Canada, counters official guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), which in 2015 labelled meat a carcinogenic. The paper was based on the research of a 14-strong international team of specialists and published on Monday in Annals of Internal Medicine. Bradley Johnston, associate professor at Dalhousie University, said: “Based on the research, we cannot say with any certainty that eating red or processed meat causes cancer, diabetes or heart disease.”

UK - Scientists have uncovered the largest volcanic region on Earth – two kilometres below the surface of the vast ice sheet that covers west Antarctica. The project, by Edinburgh University researchers, has revealed almost 100 volcanoes – with the highest as tall as the Eiger, which stands at almost 4,000 metres in Switzerland. Geologists say this huge region is likely to dwarf that of east Africa’s volcanic ridge, currently rated the densest concentration of volcanoes in the world. Volcanic eruptions may not reach the surface but could melt the ice from beneath and drastically destabilise it. These newly discovered volcanoes range in height from 100 to 3,850 metres. All are covered in ice, which sometimes lies in layers that are more than 4km thick in the region.

USA - The Fed is offering $100 billion a day in emergency loans to unnamed banks and Congress is not curious enough to hold a hearing. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York first initiated its emergency overnight loans to Wall Street this year on Tuesday, September 17, starting off at the rate of $75 billion daily. It then increased its loans by adding, in addition to the $75 billion daily, 14-day term loans in the amount of $30 billion to be offered three times this past week. But after the demand for the first 14-day loan was more than double the $30 billion offered, the New York Fed boosted the next term loans to $60 billion and increased its overnight loans to $100 billion.

Banks can’t pay their debts – if that’s the case, and they have the government monopoly power to print and create money, how is the average man to pay his debts?

USA - Stock prices are high and fairly stable, while interest rates are low and fairly stable. A casual observer might infer from this that the global financial markets are experiencing one of those fabled Goldilocks moments where everything is just right. But under the surface things are anything but just right. Banks have suddenly stopped lending to each other. One of the safest ways for a big bank to put money to work is to lend it for very short periods, say overnight, to other big banks. In normal times this kind of lending happens on a vast scale without drama of any kind.

GERMANY - Simply awful” is how Phil Smith of ihs Markit, a data provider, describes the latest survey reading of Germany’s manufacturing output. For months the purchasing-managers’ index has languished below 50, indicating contraction. An early release published on September 23rd showed it had slid to 41.4, signifying the sharpest decline in manufacturing activity since 2009. The services sector also lost momentum — for the first time in over four years, managers said they were winning less new business.

USA - Just as Trump is commander in chief of the US military, so also is he the top law enforcement official in the land. And as the top law enforcement official, it is entirely appropriate for him to go after corruption wherever it is found. Joe Biden and his son were clearly involved in some very shady things in Ukraine, and there is nothing wrong with Trump encouraging the president of Ukraine to look into those things. Considering the current political climate in Washington, it may not have been the most advisable thing to do, but Trump certainly did not break any law. The only way that Donald Trump is going to be removed from office is if he is voted out by the Republican-controlled Senate. And if the Republican-controlled Senate actually did that, it would fracture the Republican Party beyond repair... lawlessness is running rampant in Washington at this point, and it appears that a well-orchestrated plot to take Trump down is unfolding right in front of our eyes.

VATICAN - Pope Francis has publicly endorsed an essay that appeared in 2017 criticizing relations between Evangelicals and Catholics in the United States as an “ecumenism of hate.” On Thursday, La Civiltà Cattolica journal released the transcript of a meeting between Pope Francis and a group of 24 Jesuits on September 5, 2019, during his recent trip to Mozambique in which the pope suggested that certain Evangelical Protestants in the United States “cannot really be defined as Christian.” “Two important articles in Civiltà Cattolica have been published in this regard. I recommend them to you. They were written by Father Spadaro and the Argentinean Presbyterian pastor, Marcelo Figueroa. The first article spoke of the ‘ecumenism of hatred.’ The second was on the ‘theology of prosperity,’” the pontiff said. “Reading them you will see that there are sects that cannot really be defined as Christian. They preach Christ, yes, but their message is not Christian,” the pope said.

LATVIA - In a disturbing example of revising the role of Nazi collaborators in World War II, a Latvian minister said veterans, his compatriots who fought in the Waffen-SS, were “heroes” and memories of their sacrifice must be cherished. “It is our duty to honor these Latvian patriots from all the depths of our souls,” Defense Minister Artis Pabriks told the crowd during a memorial event on Saturday. He then called the Latvian legionnaires – Nazi collaborators now praised as freedom-fighters for their anti-Soviet alignment – “heroes” and “the pride of the Latvian nation and state.” The legionnaires comprised two grenadier divisions within the Waffen-SS, the elite military wing of the German Nazi party that fought alongside regular troops during the war and became infamous for their mass atrocities.

AUSTRIA - A new study from the University of Salzburg has shown 70 per cent of Austrians feel Islam is simply not compatible with the Western world. The study, which involved 1,200 participants, found that Austrians were very concerned about the effect of Islam in their country, with 72 per cent going as far as to say Muslims were not a cultural asset for Austria, Kronen Zeitung reports. Half of those who took part in the study said that they would be fine with restricting Muslims’ ability to practise their faith and nearly as many said that mosques should not be tolerated in Austria at all. A third say they oppose Muslims outright… the country’s domestic intelligence agency, said that radical Islamic terrorism is still the number one threat facing the country.
