USA - President Joe Biden will soon reverse the ban on transgender people serving openly in the military, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement Wednesday. While the reversal was not one of the 15 actions the new administration announced it would take Wednesday, Day One of the Biden presidency, Psaki said it would be among the “additional executive actions” that will be taken “in the coming days and weeks.” Biden had previously vowed to reverse the Trump administration’s transgender military policy “on Day One” of his administration. However, his nominee for secretary of defense, Lloyd Austin, is still going through the confirmation process, though it is not known whether this is the reason the reversal is not part of the president’s Day One agenda.

USA - President Biden has tapped Dr Anthony Fauci to lead a US delegation at the World Health Organization's annual meetings, as the new president and his team seek to immediately reverse President Trump's plan to withdraw from the international aid group, according to CNBC. “Once the United States resumes its engagement with the WHO, the Biden-Harris Administration will work with the WHO and our partners to strengthen and reform the organization, support the COVID-19 health and humanitarian response, and advance global health and health security," the Biden transition team said in a Wednesday statement, adding that the new administration will work with the WHO on an international pandemic response plan. The changes will make good on one of Biden’s key campaign promises. He pledged to rejoin the global health agency on his first day in office if he defeated Trump, whose decision to leave the WHO as America faced the worst coronavirus outbreak of any country globally drew bipartisan criticism from lawmakers. - CNBC

USA - In his first pro-abortion action as president, Joe Biden has written to the United Nations and informed it that the United States is rejoining and renewing funding for the pro-abortion World Health Organization. The WHO has come under fire from pro-life advocates for promoting abortion and it has received criticism for its poor handling of and deception about the coronavirus. In April, President Donald Trump announced he would halt federal taxpayer funding for the WHO, the international agency that has botched its response to the coronavirus. WHO had been accused of lying to the world about the coronavirus. It also criticized President Trump for protecting Americans from COVID by banning travel from China, where the virus originated. And it came under fire for saying killing babies in abortions is somehow an essential procedure as the world deals with the coronavirus pandemic.

USA - President Joe Biden issued an executive order on his first day in office, mandating that any schools that receive federal funding must function as if biological males who claim to be females are the same, and vice versa, or risk losing that funding. This pro-transgender policy extends to male athletes who claim their gender identity as a female should allow them to compete on women’s teams, receive women’s scholarships, and be admitted in women’s locker rooms. “Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports,” the executive order reads, promising that the Biden administration is committed to “prevent and combat discrimination on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation.”

But it’s trite to simply blame four years of Donald Trump. In a New Year’s Day interview with Newsweek, Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, reinforced the WHO’s admission that health officials do not know if COVID-19 vaccines prevent infection or if people can spread the virus to others after getting vaccinated. According to US and WHO health officials, vaccinated persons still need to mask and social distance because they could be able to spread the new coronavirus to others without knowing it.

Latvia has changed its law to exclude same-sex couples from the definition of ‘family’ (Envato) The Republic of Latvia has voted to define family solely as “a union of a male and female person”, excluding the country’s countless loving LGBT+ families. On Thursday (14 January) the Latvian parliament, or Saeima, voted 47-25 for an amendment to the constitution stipulating that a family unit consists of a marriage between a woman and a man.

In a 22-minute address after he was sworn in 11 minutes early by Chief Justice John Roberts, Biden drew a sharp contrast between his presidency and the preceding four years, saying: 'My whole soul is in this. I'll keep everything I do in your service, thinking not of power but of possibilities, not of personal injuries but the public good.' Biden did not mention Trump by name but wove a thread of contrast through his speech. He denounced 'lies told for power and for profit,' said 'there are truth and there are lies,' acknowledged the bitter divisions in the country as an 'uncivil war,' and referred to the MAGA mob which rioted in the place he spoke just two weeks ago, saying: 'Democracy prevailed.' They are taking part in a signing ceremony inside - Joe Biden has signed the Inauguration Day proclamation and nominations for his cabinet and sub-cabinet. Biden and Harris will soon review the readiness of troops, as per tradition, just outside the Capitol. After that President Joe Biden and Dr Jill Biden will depart for Arlington National Cemetery, where, accompanied by former Presidents Bush, Clinton and Obama and their spouses, they will lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After that the new president will be escorted to the White House by the military, where members of an honour guard are awaiting Joe Biden's arrival. Kamala Harris, as the new president of the Senate, will take part in the swearing in of three new senators - her replacement from California and two newly elected Democrats from Georgia. This will be the moment control of the upper house shifts from Republican to Democrat.

Employees at the French manufacturing facility of Essity, a Swedish company that makes hygiene and health products, have been told to wear a device worn around the neck that emits a high decibel sound if employees are too close to each other, according to Breitbart. The French Democratic Confederation of Labour, which is the largest union representing workers at the plant, likened the device to a dog collar, saying it is “a system comparable to that which deters dogs from barking.” The union told the French-language newspaper “Le Monde,” that the necklaces emit a sound of 85 decibels when “social distancing is no longer respected.” “The idea is to discipline employees and call them to order,” said union representative Christine Duguet, who called the devices “an attack on individual freedoms.”
