USA - The World Health Organization says that people should not change their plans to attend Pride celebrations over monkeypox outbreaks. The leading theory for the reason for rapid spread of the virus is sex between men at two raves in Europe. “It’s important that people who want to go out and celebrate gay pride, LGBTQ+ pride, to continue to go and plan to do so,” Andy Seale, a strategies adviser in the WHO Department of Global HIV, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections Programmes, said during a press briefing on Monday, according to The Hill. “There is no specific transmission route that we need to be worried about,” Seale said. “It really is connected to the fact there have been a couple of events that have perhaps amplified the current outbreak.”

USA - A barn that housed tens of thousands of chickens on Forsman Farm in Howard Lake, Minnesota, one of the nation’s largest egg producers, was set aflame late Saturday night. According to Forsman Farms, which provides more than three million eggs to the largest retailers in the country, the cause of the fire remains a mystery as investigators evaluate the scene to determine how the barn was set ablaze. “Overnight, a fire destroyed one of our barns at our Howard Lake farm. No one was injured and we are grateful that first responders were quickly on the scene to put out the fire. Unfortunately, chickens were lost because of the fire. We are evaluating the extent of the damage – which appears to be confined to a single structure – as well as investigating the cause of the fire,” a Forsman Farms told Minnesota’s local CBS affiliate. Law enforcement officials estimate at least 200,000 chickens were killed in the massive flame.

Heavy rain has prevented Grotberg from planting as much wheat crop as he wanted and is hampering farmers across the state, the top US grower of spring wheat. Instead of boosting supply, North Dakota expected to plant wheat over the smallest share of its farmland on record, according to government data. The United States is the world's fourth-largest wheat exporter and problems are hitting output at a time when the world can ill afford to lose any more supplies of the staple grain amid a global food crisis.

GERMANY - The leftist Chancellor of Germany has been accused of comparing radical climate change activists to the Nazis after he criticised black bloc protesters who attempted to disrupt a panel discussion. Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned far-left activists clad in Antifa-style black block gear for trying to break up a talk in Stuttgart, Germany at which he was invited to attend as a speaker. Scholz described the protest as “theatrically practiced,” saying per DW: “I have to say honestly, these antics, staged at various events but always by the same black-clad people, remind me of an era that is, thank God, long past.” The chancellor added that the protesters should participate in the discussion rather than attempting to “manipulate an event to serve one’s own purposes.” The relationship between Nazi theories on the land, environment, and power has been identified as a forerunner of the green movement, with Hitler — an ardent vegetarian — stressing the need for renewable energy sources such as wind power under the assumption of running out of coal power.

GERMANY - Berlin will pour 100 billion euros into its military, with the goal of fielding the largest NATO army in Europe. Germany’s plan to invest a whopping 100 billion euro ($107.35 billion) into its military will allow Berlin to significantly expand its fighting force, Chancellor Olaf Scholz told local media on Monday. This will make the German army the biggest in Europe among NATO members, he said. The pledge, which the Chancellor made in an interview with several domestic newspapers, came after the country’s major parliamentary factions agreed, on Sunday night, to a special exemption required to borrow the money and invest it in the military. The ruling coalition needed the support of opposition lawmakers to secure two thirds of the votes to adopt the decision, which requires an amendment of Germany’s Basic Law.

The WEF made the call as it wrapped up the 2022 meeting of global elitists in Davos, Switzerland. A video summary was posted to Twitter in which the WEF promoted alternatives to a food system it claimed is responsible for two thirds of global carbon dioxide emissions. A starter list published by the organization triumphs algae as being “an ideal replacement for meat” because it has a “carbon-negative profile” and is high in “essential fatty acids and high vitamin and antioxidants content.” The guide also highlights cacti as containing “high amounts of vitamins C and E, carotenoids, fibre and amino acids,” noting that it is already commonly eaten in Mexico. “This food crisis is real, and we must find solutions,” World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said.

USA - The ground is sinking in parts of California as the continued drought strains reservoirs, increasing reliance on the state’s already precarious groundwater reserves depleted by years of well-pumping. In just one year, from October 2020 to September 2021, satellite-based estimates showed entire towns in the Central Valley, including in Kings and Tulare counties, sinking by nearly a foot. The maximum loss recorded during that time was 1.1 feet on the northwestern edge of Tulare County. The sinking, known as land subsidence, happens when excessive pumping dries out the water reserves underground and collapses the space where water used to be. Experts say it’s a century-old problem in California that regulators have tried to slow with sustainability measures. But with the changing climate, they face an uphill battle. Land subsidence threatens infrastructure, including roads and canals, he said. Damage from it led to a $3.3 million repair project at the Delta Mendota canal in San Joaquin Valley, which delivers water to 1.2 million acres of farmland and 2 million people in the region.

GERMANY - German economy minister warns of disharmony as the bloc struggles to agree on oil embargo against Moscow. The unity the EU demonstrated after Russia launched its offensive in Ukraine is starting to “crumble,” German Economy Minister Robert Habeck complained on Sunday. The warning comes ahead of the bloc’s summit to discuss a new sanctions package against Moscow and a potential oil embargo. The EU has struggled to agree on imposing an oil embargo on Russia, with multiple member countries voicing concerns that the move would be fatal for their economies. Hungary, which receives most of its energy from Russia, has been the most prominent opponent of the embargo, comparing the potential effect of a full ban to “an atomic bomb.” Similar concerns over the embargo have been voiced by other landlocked nations, namely Czechia and Slovakia.
