Can BRICS save Argentina from disaster?
ARGENTINA - Argentina recently announced that it will be adopting the Chinese yuan, rather than the US dollar, for trade with the Asian giant – the latest development in a wider global process of de-dollarization. This comes as Argentina is currently pushing to formally join BRICS, for which it says it has the support of Brazil, India, and for which Russia and China have hinted at possible support in the past. Argentina is South America’s second-largest economy with significant potential to contribute to BRICS, but the country is also in the grips of an increasingly extreme economic crisis with runaway inflation that’s hitting new highs every week.
Can a multipolar financial system help struggling economies like Argentina? Can this move away from the dollar, and membership of BRICS, save the country from potential disaster? Yes, but only if Argentina stops flip-flopping on economic and foreign policy decision-making.
Argentina’s economic turmoil has reached desperate levels, a result of debt slavery to the International Monetary Fund, lack of access to dollars, and a historic drought that has battered crucial agricultural exports. While the official exchange rate with the US dollar is 222 pesos for 1 USD, the ‘Dollar Blue’, the unofficial rate offered on the black market, reached up to 500 Pesos in recent days. For context, in 2014 under leftist President Cristina Kirchner, the official rate was 8 pesos for 1 USD and the unofficial rate hovered around 12-14 pesos. Annual inflation stands at 104%.
China won’t forget NATO’s ‘barbaric’ acts in Yugoslavia
CHINA - Beijing has neither forgotten nor forgiven the May 1999 bombing of its embassy in Belgrade, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters on Monday. Wang condemned the US-led bloc for creating conflict while posing as a defensive alliance, urging it to “seriously reflect” on its crimes.
Wang noted that May 7 was the anniversary of the embassy attack, in which three Chinese journalists were killed and 20 diplomatic staff were injured. “The Chinese people will never forget what they sacrificed to uphold the truth, fairness and justice. Nor will we ever forget this barbaric atrocity committed by US-led NATO,” he told reporters.
While claiming to be a regional defense bloc, NATO has “repeatedly lit the fuse and brought conflicts to places all over the world,” Wang noted, “from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Kosovo, from Iraq to Afghanistan, and from Libya to Syria.”
Having participated in wars that have killed hundreds of thousands and displaced tens of millions, NATO is now “making forays eastward into the Asia-Pacific, instigating bloc confrontation and undermining peace and stability in the region,” the spokesman added.
China Wants Killer Robots To Fight The Next War
CHINA - War grips the world and the most powerful nations on earth go to battle once more. This time, however, it is machines that do the killing, operating free from all human oversight and accountability. It’s a grim picture of future conflicts, but one that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is nevertheless working to make a reality. The CCP is investing in artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled platforms that it hopes will one day conduct lethal missions in wartime, wholly without human input or control.
Gregory Allen, director of the Wadhwani Center for AI and Advanced Technologies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says the regime is moving well beyond any attempt to keep a human in the AI decision-making loop. “China is pursuing development of AI-enabled lethal autonomous weapons,” Allen wrote in a prepared testimony for an April 13 hearing of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission.
“The best available indications… suggest that China’s strategy is ambitious, moving beyond any sort of on-the-battlefield human supervision into increasingly autonomous AI-enabled warfare.” Such programs essentially aim toward one end: the restructuring of the Chinese military into an increasingly centralized cadre of officers who direct swarms of AI-enabled autonomous systems to do the actual fighting.
Homeless Encampments Are Exploding in Size All Over America
USA - Communities all over the United States are being taken over by giant homeless encampments, but we are supposed to believe that this is perfectly normal. The Biden administration is trying very hard to convince all of us that the economy is in fine shape even though many of our most prominent corporations are currently conducting mass layoffs and even though Challenger, Gray & Christmas is telling us that the number of jobs cuts during the first three months of this year was up 396 percent compared to the same period last year.
Just like in 2008 and 2009, large numbers of people that have lost their jobs or their businesses are ending up living in the streets, and as a result homeless encampments are absolutely exploding in size from coast to coast. In Marin County, California the average price of a home is 1.4 million dollars, and it is one of the most prosperous areas of the entire country.
But it is also home to vast hordes of homeless people. In fact, one of the biggest homeless encampments in Marin County is now more than two miles long…Hundreds of locals in one of San Francisco’s wealthiest counties have been forced to pack up their lives into RVs and trailers after being pushed out of the housing market. Shocking photos show the ever-growing line of trucks and other vehicles along 101 Highway – which now stretches over two miles in one of the largest encampments in the country.
At this point, the entire city of Portland is essentially one enormous homeless encampment, and countless businesses have fled for greener pastures as a result. Yes, some of the people living in these homeless encampments are drug addicts and criminals, but there are also a lot of hard working individuals that have just had some tough luck.
On The Verge Of A Banking Industry Apocalypse?
USA - Every time that they tell us that everything is fine, things just seem to get even worse. This banking crisis was supposed to be “over” after Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank collapsed. It wasn’t. Then it was supposed to be “over” after First Republic collapsed. It wasn’t. By now, most of you already know about what has been happening to PacWest, Western Alliance, First Horizon and countless other regional bank stocks. In all my years, I have never seen banking stocks fall so quickly. If this avalanche continues to pick up momentum, pretty soon we will have to stop talking about a “banking industry crisis” and start talking about a “banking industry apocalypse”.
Ironically, I think that CNN has actually summarized the current state of affairs better than anyone else…
A summary of where things stand in the banking crisis:
- The Fed: “Banks are fine.”
- The Treasury: “Banks are fine.”
- The banks: “We’re fine.”
- Wall Street: “Everybody sell, the banks are on fire!”
So what is the bottom line? The bottom line is that things are bad, and now that the Fed has decided to raise interest rates again they will soon get even worse. At this stage, very few banks are truly safe. Depositors continue to pull money out of the system, bonds that are held by these banks continue to lose value, and more loans are going bad with each passing day. This banking crisis is far from over. In fact, it is just beginning.
Kissinger makes Ukraine peace prediction
USA - Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has told CBS News that the conflict in Ukraine may be approaching a turning point, and that Chinese-brokered peace talks could begin by the end of 2023. "Now that China has entered the negotiation, it will come to a head, I think by the end of the year," the 99-year-old diplomat told CBS in an interview broadcast on Sunday. By that time, he continued, "we will be talking about negotiating processes and even actual negotiations."
With the release of its ‘Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis’ in February, China put itself forward as a potential mediator between Moscow and Kiev. The Chinese plan was rejected outright by the US and EU, while Russian President Vladimir Putin described some of its 12 points as “in tune” with Moscow’s position, and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky welcomed only a handful of its points, but maintains that Kiev will not compromise with Russia in any way.
Zelensky’s refusal to negotiate with Putin’s government – the Ukrainian leader banned contact with the Kremlin in a decree last October – is just one stumbling block faced by China or any other potential middleman.
World food prices rising again – UN
UNITED NATIONS - The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations reported on Friday that global food prices grew in April for the first time in a year. The price index, which tracks the most globally traded food commodities, averaged 127.2 points last month, compared to 126.5 for March.
“The slight rebound in the FFPI (FAO Food Price Index) in April was led by a steep increase in the sugar price index, along with an upturn in the meat price index, while the cereals, dairy and vegetable oil price indices continued to drop,” the FAO said.
According to the report, the sugar price index soared 17.6% from March, hitting its highest level since October 2011. The rise was reportedly linked to concerns over tighter supplies following downward revisions to production forecasts for India and China, along with lower-than-expected output in Thailand and the European Union.
Dems Threaten Supreme Court With $10 Million Funding Cut
USA - The Democrats are trying to force people to follow their agenda again, and this time they are trying to twist the arm of the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court doesn’t develop the Code of Ethics they want, Democrats want to withhold funding. Business Insider reports: “At the beginning of April, Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen — the chair of a subcommittee in charge of the Supreme Court’s budget — suggested the court needed a code of ethics, adding that Congress needed to act.”
According to Van Hollen, the Supreme Court doesn’t have to be held accountable like the rest of the government. That’s why a group of senators wrote him a letter just days before the statement suggesting that $10 million be taken from the budget until the Supreme Court adopts a Code of Ethics.
The letter to Van Hollen’s subcommittee outlined that Congress can and should force the Supreme Court to comply. Per Business Insider, “‘Congress has broad authority to compel the Supreme Court to institute these reforms, which would join other requirements already legislatively mandated. And Congress’s appropriations power is one tool for achieving these changes,’ the group wrote in their letter, according to the Hill.”
NYC Catholic Church: ‘God is Trans’ exhibit
USA - A new exhibit at a “very liberal” Manhattan church is raising some eyebrows for its religious take on gender identity. The “God is Trans: A Queer Spiritual Journey” display at the Church of St Paul the Apostle has some parishioners scratching their heads — and seems to run counter to the Catholic Church’s stance on the transgender community. “The church should not be promoting this,” one irate parishioner told The Post. “I understand there are transgender people. I pray for all people but enough is enough. It seems like they are trying to force the agenda on others,” they said. “Also, when a friend asked a priest about this they didn’t answer. You can’t put this out on the altar and then hide. That’s what gets the church in trouble.”
The display by artist Adah Unachukwu is described as a queer spiritual journey in three steps: Sacrifice, Identity and Communion. According to the exhibit, Sacrifice represents the need to “shed an old life.” Identity is described as “the most impactful part” of the display, asking the question, ‘What does holiness look like?’ Communion places “God and the mortal on the same plane.” While some took offense, others saw it as representative of the traditionally liberal Big Apple parish.
WHO Declares COVID Pandemic "Global Health Emergency" Over
UNITED NATIONS - The World Health Organization declared the COVD-19 emergency is over, ending a three-year designation it first adopted in January 2020. The health body began using the word “pandemic” in March 2020 to alert the world to the perils of the virus, though the term bears no legal meaning. Speaking to reporters on Friday, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said:
“For more than a year the pandemic has been on a downward trend. Yesterday the emergency committee meet for the fifteenth time and recommended to me that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice. It’s therefore with great hope that I declare Covid-19 over as a global health emergency,” he added.
As The Wall Street Journal reports, the move doesn’t trigger changes in government funding or services, according to Lawrence Gostin, faculty director of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University, who has advised the WHO. According to WHO-compiled figures, the pandemic has (been associated with) the deaths of nearly 7 million people and infected 765 million. Still, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus could not leave the fearmongery alone, warning that: “That does not mean Covid-19 is over as a global health threat.”
The Growing Consumer Revolt Against Woke Ideology
USA - Consumers in the US are pushing back against companies promoting woke ideology, leading to a growing backlash. Reports suggest that customers are increasingly rejecting brands that promote political views. It’s likely true: No executives at Anheuser-Busch knew what the Bud Light marketing people were planning when they decided to deploy an absurdist and deeply offensive transgender TikTok influencer to sell their beer. But soon after it happened, public disgust became rather obvious. The crisis began, but for weeks, the company was in denial. Finally, the CEO made a statement that only infuriated people more, simply because it wasn’t an apology or even an honest admission of anything that was happening.
Two weeks ago, the line about Bud Light on the streets was that the consumer protest would run the news cycle and then disappear, that the protests were limited to the “far right” and “conservative activists” but that most consumers don’t care either way. Every story in the mainstream media said the same thing. But here we are three weeks later and finally, the company stepped up again to address the growing meltdown. They put both the vice president of marketing and her boss “on leave,” which one supposes is a way of firing them while minimizing the legal liabilities and the sense that the company was facing a real crisis.
The Daily Wire reported that Anheuser-Busch lost $6 billion in six days after a trans ad campaign partnering with 26-year-old transgender ‘influencer’ Dylan Mulvaney, which top executives never approved.
Chicago Gay Bar Stops Selling Bud Light After Brand Bows to Anti-Trans Critics
USA - Several Chicago gay bars announced they will stop serving Bud Light and Anheuser Busch products after the brand “abandoned” its support for the transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney. The Chicago gay bars are also outraged that Bud Light put two unhinged marketing directors on leave after the colossal mistake. It’s not clear how many pretentious gays drink Budweiser at the clubs in Chicago. A slew of Chicago gay bars have stopped selling Anheuser Busch InBev products after the beer giant distanced itself from transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney’s Bud Light marketing campaign amid anti-trans backlash.
2Bears Tavern Group, which owns four gay bars from Uptown to Rogers Park, was the first to drop Anheuser-Busch InBev, posting on Instagram Thursday that its abandonment of Mulvaney amid controversy “shows how little Anheuser-Busch cares about the LGBTQIA+ community, and in particular transgender people, who have been under unrelenting attack in this country.”
Sidetrack, a 41-year-old gay bar founded by LGBTQ rights pioneers Art Johnston and Jose Pepé Peña, later made the same announcement. “We must also hold brands accountable if they take active steps against LGBTQ+ equality, visibility and safety,” Sidetrack posted.
‘Next to impossible’ to shield your children from ‘woke’ ideology
USA - There should no longer be any serious argument that the central tenet of the “woke” left’s cultural revolution is the focus on the indoctrination of children, particularly when it comes to seducing them into transgenderism, and the poisoning of young minds has become so pervasive that it’s now nearly impossible to stop, at least according to Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon. The driving force behind the popular satirical website, which boasts stories with headlines that are uncomfortably close to reality, gave his thoughts on the virulent mind virus that has already infected millions of Americans in an exclusive talk with Fox News Digital.
“I have a nine-year-old, I have a seven-year-old. Protecting them from this stuff is next to impossible because it’s everywhere,” he said. Dillon expressed particular concern over a study from the Manhattan Institute that found that nearly 90 percent of Americans aged 18-20 have been exposed to the toxically anti-white racist teachings of Critical Race Theory in classrooms with 74 percent saying that they had heard of gender concepts.
He described gender ideology as “the most extreme and insane example of a poisonous idea being planted in the minds of children.” “Leftists want you to think trans identification is on the rise among youth because our culture is more accepting than ever, but that’s a disgraceful lie,” Dillon said. “The confusion isn’t pre-existing in kids’ minds, it’s being planted there. We’re cultivating confusion and then treating it with affirmation.”
US prepares express weapon delivery for Taiwan
USA - The US is working on a new fast-track defense package for Taiwan, Bloomberg reports, claiming the government will use the Presidential Drawdown Authority to expedite the shipment – an instrument which has been actively used to shore up Kiev, but not Taipei. In an article on Friday citing anonymous “people familiar with the matter,” Bloomberg said the package worth $500 million would draw on the American military’s existing stockpiles of weapons and equipment. The exact makeup of the shipment is so far unknown, sources told the network.
By using the drawdown authority, the US would circumvent the process of contracting and producing arms, which is likely to be time-consuming, the report said. On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning accused the US of “turning Taiwan into a powder keg,” which, she said, “only spells trouble for our Taiwan compatriots.” Beijing, which considers the island to be an inalienable part of its territory seized by separatists, urged Washington to “stop arms sales” to Taiwan and warned of “consequences.”
Mao’s comments came in response to the Taiwan-US Defense Industry Forum held in Taipei earlier in the week. Washington has authorized multiple weapon deals with Taiwan in recent years, including a major sale of F-16 fighter jets. However, quite a few of the deals have yet to come to fruition, resulting in a backlog of sales totaling $19 billion – a figure cited by Congressman Mike Gallagher in February. Several US lawmakers have criticized the White House for being slow on the deliveries to the self-governing island.
'Time to say goodbye’ to British crown
JAMAICA - The Jamaican government will introduce a bill next month to sever the country’s ties with the British monarchy, possibly removing King Charles as the head of state by 2024, legal and constitutional minister Marlene Malahoo Forte told Sky News on Thursday. "While the United Kingdom is celebrating the coronation of the King, that is for the United Kingdom," Malahoo Forte told Sky. "Jamaica is looking to write a new constitution... which will sever ties with the monarch as our head of state.”
“My government is saying we have to do it now,” she continued, adding that for Jamaicans, it’s “time to say goodbye” to the British crown. Malahoo Forte explained that her government will follow King Charles III’s coronation this weekend by introducing a bill aimed at making Jamaica a republic.
It could take around nine months to pass, and would be followed by a referendum giving the Jamaican people the final say on breaking away from the UK. A recent poll has found that majorities in almost half of British Commonwealth countries – including Jamaica – would vote to become republics if given the opportunity. A British colony since 1655, Jamaica was granted independence in 1962.
