USA - HSBC Holdings Plc, Citigroup Inc and Morgan Stanley see mounting evidence that global markets are in the last stage of their rallies before a downturn in the business cycle. Analysts at the Wall Street behemoths cite signals including the breakdown of long-standing relationships between stocks, bonds and commodities as well as investors ignoring valuation fundamentals and data. It all means stock and credit markets are at risk of a painful drop.
VENEZUELA - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called Tuesday for Pope Francis's support against a "military threat" from the United States, as international pressure mounts over the deadly political crisis Caracas is facing. "May the pope help us prevent Trump from sending troops to invade Venezuela," Maduro told a news conference. "I ask for the pope's help against the military threat from the United States."
RUSSIA - Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that Israel is prepared to intervene in Syria to counteract the Iranian influence in the conflict. Moscow, which views Iran as key to resolving the crisis, said it will note Israeli interests. When the two leaders met in Sochi on Wednesday, Netanyahu told Putin that any peace deal in Syria must entail the full withdrawal of any Iranian forces from the area. "Iran is already well on its way to controlling Iraq, Yemen and to a large extent is already in practice in control of Lebanon," Reuters quoted Netanyahu as saying. "We cannot forget for a single minute that Iran threatens every day to annihilate Israel. Israel opposes Iran's continued entrenchment in Syria. We will be sure to defend ourselves with all means against this and any threat."
SYRIA - As the mainstream corporate press attempts to guilt Westerners over making Syrian refugees return home, Western outlets are, in fact, deconstructing their own propaganda narrative for all to see. For instance, according to the International Organization for Migration, more than 600,000 Syrians have returned home to Syria since the beginning of 2017, more than the number of returning refugees in the entire year of 2016.
USA - What really causes natural disasters? At first glance that may sound like a silly question. We all know that natural disasters are acts of God/random occurrences that we have no control over. They don’t really have a unifying cause. They just happen. That’s one way to look at it. But after hearing about the flooding that New Orleans experienced earlier this month, I realized that there’s another way to look at what causes natural disasters.
USA - The Rocklin Academy school board is facing tough questions from parents concerned over a controversial incident involving transgender discussions inside a kindergarten class. "These parents feel betrayed by the school district that they were not notified," said Karen England with the Capitol Resource Institute.
ISRAEL - Israel's foreign ministry has issued a statement denouncing US billionaire George Soros, a move that appeared designed to align Israel more closely with Hungary ahead of a visit to Budapest next week by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
USA - There’s one big problem with the statement by Soros’ Human Rights Watch group, Soros admitted he was no friend to the Jews during the Holocaust in a 1990 interview with Steve Kroft of “60 Minutes”. The interview was suspiciously scrubbed from the internet for some time, but has just recently resurfaced.
VATICAN - Pope Francis on Monday urged countries to greatly improve their welcome to migrants and stop collective expulsions, saying migrants' dignity and right to protection trumps national security concerns. Francis' politically pointed message was made in view of the Catholic Church's 2018 world refugee day, celebrated January 14. It comes amid mounting anti-immigrant sentiment in Europe and beyond following waves of migrant arrivals and Islamic extremist attacks. In the message, Francis demanded governments welcome, protect, promote and integrate migrants, saying Jesus' message of love is rooted in welcoming the "rejected strangers of every age." He said the principle of ensuring each person's dignity "obliges us to always prioritize personal safety over national security."
UK - The world's current collection of 14,900 nuclear weapons possesses enough power to kill millions of people and flatten dozens of cities. According to Telegraph research, it is estimated that the US and Russian arsenals combined have power equating to 6,600 megatons. This is a tenth of the total solar energy received by Earth every minute.
USA - There is always common ground for those who dare to seek it. Remember the "Russians hacked our election!" hysteria - or have you already forgotten? That entire narrative collapsed under a deluge of factual evidence that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) data release was an insider job, and a compelling lack of evidence of any other Russian hacking.
ITALY - At least two people have died after an earthquake rocked Ischia, a volcanic island off the coast of Naples. Two women died and 39 people have been injured – at least one of them seriously – after the earthquake struck. Seven are still missing as officials rush to find them in the rubble. Campi Flegrei, one of Europe's biggest supervolcanoes, lies just nine miles from Naples. Scientists from University College London (UCL) and the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples recently warned the volcano "may be approaching a critical stage". Dr Christopher Kilburn, director of the UCL Hazard Centre, warned officials that "further unrest will increase the possibility of an eruption". Italy lies on the edge of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates, making it vulnerable to seismic activity.
USA - Every tech giant has a dirty little secret behind its market success. In the early days of dial-up internet, for example, AOL (which stands for America On Line) earned most of its revenues from pay-by-the-hour connection fees that granted users access to adult chat rooms. Google’s success has been ensured by it functioning as a surveillance engine for the NSA; eBay is the internet’s most popular sales hub for stolen goods; and Facebook was thrust into a dominant tech position by its alliance with intelligence entities (CIA, etc) that use Facebook to track the whereabouts and social connections among hundreds of millions of users. So what’s Amazon.com’s dirty little secret? Counterfeit products.
USA - Ron Paul's sell-off prediction just got more severe. The former Republican Congressman from Texas believes escalating dysfunction in Washington will create even more pain for Wall Street. "A 50 percent pullback is conceivable," Paul said on "Futures Now" recently. "I don't believe it's ten years off. I don't even believe it's a year off. "
USA - Warning: A correction in the market is "inevitable" and there are three key factors that could spark chaos on Wall Street, according to James Advantage Fund president Barry James. The investor likened the market to Yellowstone National Park's famous supervolcano, which many believe is close to eruption. Stocks continued to hit record highs on Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average setting its 8th consecutive all-time high.
