EUROPE - Two weeks ago, somewhat out of the blue, ECB President Mario Draghi issued an odd statement confirming that the European Central Bank needs to approve any operation in the foreign reserves of euro zone countries, including gold and large foreign currency holdings. “The ECB shall approve both the operations in foreign reserve assets remaining with the NCBs (national central banks)… and Member States’ transactions with their foreign exchange working balances above a certain threshold…”
USA - Whether we like it or not, our society has become completely reliant on plastic. From food preservation to water transportation, computer technology to healthcare and medicine, plastic can be found in nearly every facet of the human experience. But as we well know, plastic is a double-edged sword, with massive amounts of plastic waste not only piling up in landfills, but floating in the most remote depths of our oceans and water supplies. And despite our knowledge of plastic’s harmful effects on the environment, we’ve become so reliant on plastic that there seems to be no end in sight. In fact, plastic production is growing on a yearly basis–and posing a potentially mortal threat to us all. However, a newly-discovered type of mushroom could not only play a crucial role in slashing plastic pollution, but could have myriad other uses in addressing the environmental crises the planet faces.
UK - Theresa May has written to EU Council President Donald Tusk to request Brexit extension beyond April 12
• PM says she wants a three-month delay until June 30 as ministers threaten to resign if she asks for longer
• But Brussels will demand that the extension will be a year to avoid another short-term No Deal cliff edge
• Prime Minister wants 'termination clause' to allow UK to leave EU on May 22, day before European elections
• AG Geoffrey Cox we need to use 'any means to secure an ends' and cross-party talks are vital for securing deal
GERMANY - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded, according to its first secretary general, Lord Hastings Ismay, “to keep the Soviet Union out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.” Seventy years ago this Thursday, as the Soviet Union was violently propping up puppet governments across Eastern Europe, Western leaders signed a mutual defense pact establishing NATO as a bulwark against communism.
ISRAEL - For the first time ever, an Israeli politician has had the temerity to publicly declare what, for more than 2,000 years, the Jewish people have prayed for: build the Temple now. Moshe Feiglin, head of the Zehut party, shocked participants at a Maariv/Jerusalem Post conference in Tel Aviv on Wednesday night. “I don’t want to build a (Third) Temple in one or two years, I want to build it now,” Feiglin said to the crowd.
SAUDI ARABIA - Saudi Arabia has nearly completed its first nuclear reactor according to satellite photos of the facility published by GoogleEarth, which reveal a "columnar vessel that will contain atomic fuel," according to Bloomberg. Located in the southwest corner of the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology in Riyadh, the new facility has raised concerns in the West - as the Saudis have yet to sign up to the international framework of rules adhered to by other nuclear powers in order to prevent civilian atomic programs being used to develop weapons. Nuclear fuel providers, meanwhile, cannot legally supply the new reactor until modern surveillance arrangements have been reached with the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. Last year, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman threatened to develop a nuclear bomb if regional rival Iran does first.
USA - Leftist policies are reaching new levels of insanity in Massachusetts, as Suffolk County DA Rachael Rollins pushes her highly contested “no-prosecute” list into action. The “list” gives a green light to a number of arrest-worthy offenses — including trespassing, shoplifting, disorderly conduct, and “wanton or malicious destruction of property.” In other words, local law enforcement is being directed by the district attorney to stand idly by while miscreants steal and destroy property. The directive from Rollins also orders police to refuse to cooperate with ICE in the arresting of illegal immigrants at the courthouse — no matter the severity of their crimes. What could go wrong? No one cares about the shopkeepers and homeowners that are victimized. Under far-left dogma, criminals are the true victims, we’re just too “hateful” to see it. This is doublethink at its finest.
USA - If given the choice, how many parents would put petrochemicals in their children’s food? But when you buy most children’s foods on grocery store shelves, that’s the decision you’re making. These products are filled with petrochemical-derived ingredients from artificial colors to preservatives. Alarmingly, these ingredients have also been linked with health problems from hyperactivity to cancer.
USA - Last May, an elderly man was admitted to the Brooklyn branch of Mount Sinai Hospital for abdominal surgery. A blood test revealed that he was infected with a newly discovered germ as deadly as it was mysterious. Doctors swiftly isolated him in the intensive care unit. The germ, a fungus called Candida auris, preys on people with weakened immune systems, and it is quietly spreading across the globe.
EUROPE - As the eurozone economy slows down and the European Central Bank (ECB) runs out of ways to fuel the market, market strategist Russell Napier has said the euro may be in trouble. Speaking to FT, the analyst firmly stated that the global monetary system is beginning to show serious vulnerabilities, noting that the demise of the euro may trigger the collapse of the existing financial system.
EUROPE - The Euro “will collapse” as it is a “house of cards” warned Otmar Issing, the founder and creator of the euro in an extraordinary interview on Monday. In the explosive interview with the journal Central Banking, Professor Issing, said “one day, the house of cards will collapse” as the European Central Bank (ECB) is becoming dangerously over-extended and the whole euro project is unworkable in its current form.
USA - Earlier today, my attention was directed to a thread on an Internet discussion forum that lamented how much America had changed over the years. I don’t know exactly why, but the posts on that thread really touched me. Those of us that are old enough to remember what America was like before the Internet grew up in a much simpler time. Yes, we didn’t have all of the luxuries that we take for granted in 2019, but we found joy in the simple things and people were generally much happier. Today, we seemingly have so much going for us, and yet people are lonelier, more disconnected and more depressed than ever before. The suicide rate in the United States is up 34 percent since the year 2000, approximately 40 million American adults have an anxiety disorder, and overdosing on drugs is now the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50. Clearly our society is not heading in the right direction.
USA - It is amazing the power that politically correct kooks have acquired over language, art, and literature. It is a sign that the West is culturally dead. When high museums rename paintings because some emotional weakling declares the name to be offensive, it becomes obvious that the custodians of Western culture have lost their belief in Western culture. When universities cover up murals because of a claim they are offensive to people whose presence on the campus is miniscule if present at all, you know that learning is no longer the purpose of the university.
BRUNEI - New Islamic criminal laws that took effect in Brunei on Wednesday, punishing gay sex and adultery by stoning offenders to death, have triggered an outcry from countries, rights groups and celebrities far beyond the tiny Southeast Asian nation’s shores. But under the new laws — which also apply to children and foreigners, even if they are not Muslim — those found guilty of gay sex can be stoned to death or whipped. Adulterers risk death by stoning too, while thieves face amputation of a right hand on their first offense and a left foot on their second. Phil Robertson, the deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, called on the sultan to “immediately suspend amputations, stoning, and all other rights-abusing provisions and punishments.” “Brunei’s new penal code is barbaric to the core, imposing archaic punishments for acts that shouldn’t even be crimes,” Robertson said in a statement Wednesday.
UK - The clocks aren't broken, the kids just can't read them, and that's just not right, not even twice a day. Apparently, younger generations in Britain have been spending so much time on their digital devices that they can no longer tell time on analog clocks, reports Inspire To Change. So, rather than educate kids to properly read an analog clock, schools have elected to remove the clocks entirely from exam halls. "In the UK, many educators are phasing out analog clocks in favor of digital ones," reports the outlet. "Students taking the GCSE and A-level exams were complaining that they couldn’t read the time. In order to make everything 'as easy and straightforward as possible,' they are making the switch to digital time reading."
