USA - Troubling new research finds the majority of foods purchased by Americans (60%) contain any number of artificial additives such as preservatives, sweeteners, and coloring or flavoring agents. Even worse, these levels represent a 10-percent increase since 2001. The study makes a strong case that the prevalence of food additives is on the rise in a major way.
GERMANY - At the current “sluggish” pace, it could take 50 years to modernize, a parliamentary report has said. The German Armed Forces remain underequipped, underfunded and too slow in dealing with problems, a report on the state of the Bundeswehr has found. While many of the issues have been known for years, “shockingly little” has been done to address some of them despite the crisis in Ukraine, it noted. The document was produced by the office of Eva Hogl, the German parliament’s commissioner for the Bundeswehr, who submitted it to the legislature’s President Barbel Bas on Tuesday.
CHINA - Last week, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced a landmark deal, brokered by China in Beijing, to formally restore diplomatic relations. The agreement saw the two sectarian arch rivals in the Middle East agree to put aside their differences and to normalize ties. It was the first ever deal of its kind overseen by China, framing itself as a peacemaker, and showing that its commitment to have good relations with every country in the region is not just based on rhetoric but actual substance. Some have described it as a sign of a “changing global order.”
USA - Credit Suisse is facing the same fate as the once-mighty Lehman Brothers, the renowned economist warns. Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse will be the next to go bust following the failure of a number of US banks amid the unfolding financial crisis, according to economist Robert Kiyosaki, who predicted the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008.
GERMANY - German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has named Major General Carsten Breuer as the new head of Germany's armed forces, German media reported Monday. Breuer, 59, is replacing General Eberhard Zorn, 63, who had come under fire for his flawed analysis of Russian and Ukrainian military capabilities. Breuer gained renown for leading Germany's pandemic crisis response team from November 2021 to 2022. His ascent to the role of "general inspector" of the Bundeswehr will make him the highest-ranking soldier in the country.
GERMANY - German Green Party Parliamentary Foreign Policy Spokesperson Jürgen Trittin, predicts that, in the fall, the West will put heavy pressure on Ukraine to negotiate with Russia to end the war. The US administration recently sent out signals to this effect, Trittin reported. It would be unwise to continue the support for Kiev in the coming presidential elections, due to a change of mood within the US population. While this is an indication that Kiev must change course, several countries outside the transatlantic West are intensifying their mediation for a ceasefire.
GERMANY - Germany is rapidly descending into “eco-dictatorship” under the country’s Green minister for economics, an expert has claimed. Professor Manuel Frondel, a member of the RWI Essen (Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, Essen) think-tank, has lashed out at Robert Habeck, Germany’s economics and climate change minister, saying that the country is devolving into an “eco-dictatorship” under his watch.
FRANCE - While WW1 ended [over] a century ago, its scars can still be found across Northern France and Belgium. Zone Rouge (French for Red Zone) is perhaps the ultimate example of this. At the end of the war in 1918, the French government isolated areas in red and forbade activities such as forestry, farming and even the building of houses from being performed inside them. In total the non-contiguous areas took up 1,200 sq km (460 sq mi) (roughly the size of New York City).
USA - The news of Tanaga Volcano coming back to life after a hundred years of dormancy is yet another scary reminder for the people of Alaska that nature never takes a day off. Fox News reports, following a series of earthquakes, the Alaska Volcano Observatory raised the alert level for Tanaga Volcano to advisory. A research geophysicist John Power stated “That indicates that we’re seeing significant unrest at the volcano. Whether or not this will lead to an eruption is something we can’t say at this point in time, but we are concerned about it enough that we have gone and elevated the warning level.”
USA - Banks across America are sitting on $620 billion of 'unrealized losses' - assets which have decreased in value but have not yet been sold - the head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation warned. News of the worrying shortfall came amid the closure of Silicon Valley Bank - the largest collapse since Washington Mutual in 2008.
USA - The collapse of SVB (Silicon Valley Bank) is the latest sign the Fed is breaking the financial system. Will it continue to raise interest rates as Fed Head Jay Powell said this past week? Holter says that is the biggest question out there because it comes down to picking what you want to save. It’s the US dollar or the financial system. Holter explains, “They can save one thing or the other. They can save the financial system, or they can save the dollar. If they save the dollar, they will have to raise rates, and they will have to keep tightening. To save the financial system, they will have to loosen.
USA - On Friday, we said that the Fed will have to make an announcement before the Monday open, and we didn't have to wait that long: in fact, the Fed waited just 15 minutes after futures opened for trading to announce the new bailout, alongside even more shocking news: the Treasury announced that New York State regulators are shuttering Signature Bank - a major New York bank - adding that all depositors both at Signature Bank, and also the now insolvent Silicon Valley Bank, will have access to their money on Monday.
USA - Very few Americans — or, for that matter, very few people on the planet — can remember a time when freedom of the seas was in question. But for most of human history, there was no such guarantee. Pirates, predatory states, and the fleets of great powers did as they pleased. The current reality, which dates only to the end of World War II, makes possible the commercial shipping that handles more than 80 percent of all global trade by volume — oil and natural gas, grain and raw ores, manufactured goods of every kind.
UK - The UK government has earmarked an additional £5 billion ($6 billion) for bolstering the country’s military capabilities, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak revealed in a statement published on Monday. Britain’s nuclear deterrent is among the areas that will receive investment. Downing Street said the newly unveiled appropriations were in addition to a previous increase in 2020, which envisaged the allocation of £24 billion ($29 billion) over the following four years.
SOUTH KOREA - The country should obtain atomic weapons despite a possible international backlash, Oh Se-hoon stated. The conflict in Ukraine proves that South Korea needs to obtain nuclear weapons in order to counter the threat posed by nuclear-armed North Korea, Seoul’s mayor has said. “North Korea has nearly succeeded in miniaturizing and lightening tactical nuclear weapons and secured at least dozens of warheads,” Oh Se-hoon declared in an interview with Reuters on Monday.
