Top court says police don’t take orders from Ben Gvir

ISRAEL - The High Court of Justice ruled on Sunday that National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir may not issue operational orders to police forces regarding how they manage demonstrations and the use of force during protests. In response, Ben Gvir assailed the ruling as a “coup” by the court that “cancels the executive branch.” The court also ruled that the far-right minister may not instruct the police as to what crowd dispersal methods to use, or when, where and how protestors involved in civil disobedience can be forcibly dispersed.

Credit Suisse takeover fails to stabilise markets

UK - The stock market opened lower today despite the Bank of England rushing to reassure investors after the dramatic rescue of Credit Suisse. The FTSE 100 index dropped more than 1 per cent after opening, to its lowest level since early November - with traders braced for another tense day. Nearly 200 banks at risk of SVB-type collapse

USA - A new study published on the Social Science Research Network estimates that 186 other banks are at risk of failing like the now-doomed Silicon Valley Bank, USA Today reports. Per the study, the banks could fail if only 50 percent of customers decide to suddenly pull their money, amounting to a run on the bank. "Even if only half of uninsured depositors decide to withdraw, almost 190 banks are at a potential risk of impairment to insured depositors, with potentially $300 billion of insured deposits at risk," the study's abstract says. "If uninsured deposit withdrawals cause even small fire sales, substantially more banks are at risk."

The alert is due to be sent on Sunday, April 23, and people won't be able to access other features on their phones unless they acknowledge it.

We want to reduce dependencies and increase the resilience of our economies.” the German chancellor said in a tweet.

Netanyahu's blind side

ISRAEL - One sentence has dominated talks between Benjamin Netanyahu and his associates, a sort of mantra that reflects the prime minister's mindset in recent years, especially since returning to power. "Everything is reversible," Netanyahu often tells his associates – his trial, governance, and legislation. "Everything is reversible except for one thing – if Iran goes nuclear, that is the end of us". Netanyahu's main focus is on the Iranian nuclear threat and the recent distancing of Saudi Arabia and is only occasionally interrupted by domestic problems. He loses his image as a great statesman when he is drawn into the affairs of the Knesset.

The rare calls for restraint and international intervention came as thousands of Israelis once again took to the streets to protest Netanyahu’s plan.

AI Gods & ChatGPT religions are coming

UK - Intelligent AI robots are coming - and they will have the ability to perform religious ceremonies and could even turn against humans, experts have warned. As AI becomes more prominent in our day to day lives, it wasn’t going to be long before the worlds of religion and tech merged. Wesley Wildman, Professor of Philosophy, Theology, and Ethics, and of Computing and Data Sciences at Boston University, told The Sun that he believes AI will soon be able to perform religious duties even better than human priests.

IDF reservists say will not report to duty as of Sunday

How does the China-brokered Saudi-Iranian normalization affect Israel?

MIDDLE EAST - The restoration of diplomatic relations could derail the strategy of uniting the region against a ‘common threat’. A key goal of both the Israeli and American governments is to foster the normalization of ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, and part of the strategy to make this happen was to unite the two against what has been depicted as a common enemy, Iran. The Saudi-Iranian rapprochement now appears to have thrown a spanner in the works of such efforts, and hence enraged the Israelis.
