USA - Of all the questions hanging over world trade this year, none loom bigger than President Trump. For decades, the US was the biggest driving force behind moves to stimulate more international trade. Now it's the most important sceptic. So for 2018, the big question has to be: what can we expect from him, and other forces around the world that share his doubts about trade?
UK - The UK was forced to rely on the French and German military last year to cover gaps in Britain’s defence budget, an MP claimed. After Russian submarines entered Scottish territory on multiple occasions the UK had to ask NATO allies to send 17 spy planes to hunt the submarines between January and November. As well as French and German military, aircraft from Norway, Canada and the US were also deployed to RAF Lossiemouth. The shortage of UK RAF planes comes after a decision made in 2010 to axe a fleet of Nimrod spy planes.
GERMANY - If there’s one thing in Germany more resistant to change than the cult of a strong currency and a love of well-balanced accounts, it’s a foreign policy founded on the European project and strong ties with the US. Yet the map of major powers allied with Germany has changed dramatically in the last three years, as the list of satisfied friends has dwindled, and that of dissatisfied partners has grown.
USA - Late last year the Chairman & CEO of JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon became the laughing stock of the crypto world when he came out railing against bitcoin and the blockchain. Here’s how the contortion works: Google, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other internet gatekeepers are increasingly banning and censoring users and content by rolling out terms of service that give them justification to silence anyone peddling “hate.” But what is hate, exactly?
